In a combination of turn-based and real-time play elements , the player takes control of a great power of the 18th century. Turn based game
The turn-based part of the game is controlled by an overview map called the World Map or Campaign Map . Then the moves of the computer-controlled factions are executed, after which the next round begins for the player.
The real-time game involves battles between two or more factions in a three-dimensional environment. In combat, each faction involved will field up to 20 units, each consisting of 12 to 200 soldiers. The number of men per unit depends on the unit type, so for example, one unit of cavalry consists of far fewer soldiers than one unit of line infantry.
Empire: Total War was the first part of the Total War series for which a massive multiplayer mode was announced. Previously, it was only possible to play individual battles against each other. For Empire , it was planned that the players would also be able to play the Great Campaign against each other. The mode was originally intended to be made available shortly after the release of the title via the online platform Steam . But due to delays in development, this was only later published by a patch on 7 December 2009.
